How to Throw a Surprise Party for a Boss

Eva Goyena

Ask Mr. Manny Guillermo’s (MRG) colleagues from KSearch Asia and they can give you Fantastic Surprise Party 101.

A day before the boss’ birthday I got a chat message from the executive secretary about the change in venue.  Jollibee, it will be. It must be real fun and surprise, I quipped.

It's always fun to throw a party.  Planning and keeping it a secret is probably the best part of it.  There are tons of different kinds of surprise parties but throwing one for the big boss can be a tough one. Firstly, you need a pretty good excuse to get the “surprisee” out of the office, then you need a perfect pitch to lure him to go to a “Jollibee”, a place he presumably doesn’t frequent. Apparently, the KSearch team knows all the tricks! But wait, somebody from MRG’s team just shared that they were already treated by the celebrant to a cocktail party the night before at the plush and exclusive Tower Club. Wow!

Forget the kids; grown-ups want to have fun too!  We were all treated with fun games, balloons, and kids’ prizes (and yes, adult-size children's favorite meals, to boot), making it all smashingly memorable. And to do something like this for a man who has achieved a great deal in his life makes it doubly edifying!

From conceiving the whole idea to executing it to perfection – all these did not escape the overwhelming appreciation by the totally surprised birthday celebrant.  In his immediate thank-you note to everyone, he eloquently said as much: “What I’ve experienced and witnessed all of today, starting this morning, are beyond words, thank you.”

Happy birthday, MRG!
